The day starts at 08:30 AM when our guide and driver pick you up from your hotel. First, visit the Choeung Ek Genocide Center, located 15 kilometers southwest of Phnom Penh. Known for its portrayal in the film The Killing Fields, this site is a chilling reminder of the Khmer Rouge regime, where over 17,000 civilians were killed between 1975 and 1978. At the center, you’ll find a 17-story glass stupa containing 8,000 skulls exhumed from mass graves.
Afterward, head back to the city to visit Tuol Sleng Museum (S21 Prison), a former secondary school turned into a detention and torture center during the Khmer Rouge era. If time permits, take a quick stop at Phsar Toul Tom Pung (Russian Market), known for its vibrant local goods and bustling atmosphere.
At noon, explore the Royal Palace, a stunning complex that serves as the residence of the King of Cambodia. Then, head to the National Museum, home to one of the world’s finest collections of Khmer art and artifacts, including sculptures, pottery, and bronze works spanning centuries. Finish the day with a visit to Wat Phnom, a Buddhist temple perched on a hill, which is a symbol of Phnom Penh. The pagoda, dating back to 1372, is where four Buddha statues were discovered.
